Councilmember Ted Winterer has been a champion for pedestrian and bicycle safety for his entire eight-year tenure on Santa Monica City Council. As Winterer explained in his response to Bike The Vote L.A., his four-person household has only had one car since 2002, and primarily depends on the Big Blue Bus and bicycling for everyday travel. This on-the-ground experience has clearly helped inform Winterer’s decision making.
In his recent terms as Mayor Pro Tem and subsequently Mayor, Winterer made climate action a central component of Santa Monica city policy, including access to transit, requiring bike amenities as part of development projects, setting maximum parking requirements for new buildings in Downtown Santa Monica, and hosting a monthly community bike ride and community walks. He has been a proponent for youth climate action, engaging with Climate Action Santa Monica to help foster the next generation of climate leaders.
As Santa Monica navigates the COVID-19 fiscal crisis, maintaining the City’s progress toward becoming a more pedestrian-, bike- and transit-friendly community will be a challenge. With his years of determined advocacy on active transportation and climate change, Winterer’s continued leadership will be invaluable.
